You know it’s a bad sign when UFC President Dana White calls Khabib Nurmagomedov against Tony Ferguson “a fight that got away.”
For those hoping that the long-awaited and frequently canceled fight had been reworked this year, the UFC executive did not offer much encouragement during a question and answer session on Reddit on Wednesday afternoon.
Asked about his confidence in seeing the fight in 2020, White wrote, “Not very. I’m afraid of what will happen if we try to fight this fight again. ”
MMA fans and watchers collectively groaned again earlier this month when the coronavirus pandemic led to the fifth cancellation of the confrontation, the main event at UFC 249 on April 18. the UFC told him it was the location of the event in Abu Dhabi. Unable to leave his country, the UFC lightweight champion has chosen to follow the residence guidelines issued to prevent the spread of the virus. Ferguson was re-rented against Justin Gaethje at the new location of UFC 249 on tribal land in Lemoore, California, before political pressure resulted in the postponement of the event.
Now rescheduled for May 9 in Jacksonville, Florida, UFC 249 is set to host Ferguson against Gaethje in a bout for the light interim title. Nurmagomedov, who is currently observing Ramadan, is expected to resume operations in August or September.
Nurmagomedov welcomed the idea of meeting the winner of the UFC 249 main event, and White previously said the winner would fight for the undisputed belt. But in today’s conversation, White expressed more excitement seeing a rematch between Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor, who met at UFC 229 in the most lucrative pay-per-view of the promotion history. Nurmagomedov won by a submission in the fourth round and repeatedly rejected a rematch.
Asked about a new revenge, White launched Nurmagomedov against McGregor 2.
“I have to say Conor [vs.] Khabib, ”he wrote. “Conor wants this rematch so bad and I would love to see it. “
