UFC chief Dana White has confirmed that Justin Gaethje will challenge Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 for the provisional light belt.

Defending champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was forced to withdraw from his fight against Ferguson due to the closure of the coronavirus in Russia.

Although most of the sporting calendar is destroyed by the ongoing pandemic, White is determined to have its main event on April 18.

The New York State Sports Commission has refused to host him in Brooklyn as originally planned, but the event will still take place in the United States behind closed doors.

Although the location of UFC 249 has yet to be confirmed, the fight for the interim title of 155 pounds is locked.

Posting on Instagram, Nurmagomedov said: “Currently I am in Dagestan and I train and prepare myself every day, although I do not know what I am preparing because after we arrived in Russia we have also learned that the borders are going to be locked.

“Same thing in the United States, even in Europe, Emirates – everywhere. The whole world is currently in quarantine.

“So now I hear they are looking to organize it with or without me. OK Go ahead.

“I even hear that they are looking for an opponent for Tony because he is in the United States and I am here in Russia. But I am not here of my own free will. “

White confirmed via Twitter that Nurmagomedov was out of UFC 249, confirming that number 4 competitor Gaethje was the substitute for the Russian

John Kavanagh, Conor McGregor’s coach, had suggested that the Irishman could replace his fierce rival Nurmagomedov as Ferguson’s opponent.

Respected MMA reporter Ariel Helwani asked fans to vote for one of two options regarding how the company will proceed in light of Khabib’s comments – either pit Ferguson against Gaethje or wait for the coronavirus to simmer.

However, Kavanagh brazenly noted, “Maybe there is a third option …”
