The blind tenor staged the show, titled Andrea Bocelli: Music for Hope, with just cathedral organist Emanuele Vianelli, singing tracks including Ave Maria, Sancta Maria, Panis Angelicus and Domine Deus.
Before the event, the artist had expressed the wish that his music bring people together to pray for the healing of the Earth in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, which forced his native Italy to national confinement, and while he finished the set outside the historic site with a cover of Amazing Grace by John Newton, viewers went on social networks to share their joy of Bocelli’s flawless performance.
Among those who connected for the unique concert, Kim Kardashian, who sprang on Twitter, “A prayer for our world of @AndreaBocelli”, while Hugh Jackman posted, “From the bottom of my heart, thank you @AndreaBocelli A great gift and exactly what we needed. #AmazingGrace #HappyEaster. ”
Bocelli had been invited by city officials to hold the concert live to bring hope to fellow Italian citizens, who are currently in detention until May 3.
To date, more than 102,000 cases of infection have been confirmed in Italy, where more than 19,800 people have died from COVID-19.
