Could Tua Tagovailoa play for the Patriots in the first round of the NFL draft? | New England Patriots

Despite a serious hip injury that ended his 2019 season early, Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was widely regarded as the second best quarterback in the 2020 NFL draft behind LSU’s Joe Burrow. It could change.

Tagovailoa is the No. 3 or 4 quarterback of some teams’ rosters, Matt Miller of Bleacher Report reported on Friday.

Miller reported, “Not all of them are injuries. “

“A team source said they eliminated Tua for a global support cast that often saves him when the games go down,” writes Miller. “Another mentioned the bad interviews and the work of the board of directors at the recruitment meetings. “

So that begs the question: if Tagovailoa falls behind Burrow, Justin Herbert of Oregon and Jordan Love of Utah, could he play for the New England Patriots in 23rd place?

The Patriots may still need to trade for Tagovailoa, but that would become a more realistic possibility if it were QB # 3 or 4. It would be very difficult for the Patriots to move from # 23 overall to the top five choice of the NFL 2020 draft. If Tagovailoa actually started to fall into adolescence, then the Patriots could potentially ride without abandoning the farm.

Currently, the Patriots have Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer on their quarterback depth chart, the first being the potential candidate. The Patriots have a quarterback vacancy after eliminating Cody Kessler.

Tagovailoa has made 474 passes on 684 for 7,442 yards with 87 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in three seasons in Alabama. In 2018, his only full season, he completed 69 passes for 3,966 yards with 43 touchdowns and six interceptions. He is one of the most accurate passers-by in the 2020 NFL draft, although he is not the strongest arm.

Tagovailoa measures 6 feet 217 pounds. He did not work at the NFL Scouting Combine because of his hip injury. The QB prospect declared itself 100% healthy last week.
