Costco to require all buyers to wear face masks starting Monday



All Costco customers will have to wear face masks in stores starting Monday, the company announced on Wednesday, making it the first large US retailer to require customers to wear face covers.


Costco members and guests should wear a mask or face cover that covers their mouth and nose at all times while inside the store, the company said.

Children under the age of 2 and those unable to wear a face cover due to a health condition are exempt.

Some cities and states, including Maryland and San Francisco, have issued their own mask orders, but to date Costco is the only major retailer to require masks in all of its stores.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends all Americans, especially in public places where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, such as grocery stores

“The use of a mask or face covering should not be seen as a substitute for social distancing. Please continue to follow the rules regarding the appropriate distance to Costco premises, ”said the company.

Although Costco experiences a slight increase in sales in the midst of the pandemic, some employees Told Buzzfeed News the company was not doing enough to protect employees and was slow to implement firm coronavirus protocols. The company did not respond to questions from BuzzFeed.


Costco has announced that it will reserve 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Monday through Friday for seniors-only purchases in select stores, and customers can bring their own reusable bags as long as they load them themselves. Costco will no longer accept returns of toilet paper, bottled water, disinfectant wipes, paper towels, rice and disinfectant spray.
