Coronavirus: what happens in an intensive care unit?


Intensive care units (ICUs) are specialized units in a hospital that take care of very sick people.

They are equipped with numerous highly technical surveillance equipment and specially trained personnel.

Coronavirus patients have lung problems and are therefore generally admitted to intensive care units in order to obtain respiratory aid.

As Prime Minister Boris Johnson continues to be treated for coronavirus in an intensive care unit, BBC correspondent Laura Foster explains how they work.
