Hundreds of protesters, including some armed, gathered Thursday in the state capital of Michigan, as state lawmakers debated the Democratic Governor’s request to extend his emergency powers to fight the coronavirus.

A crowded crowd of protesters, some of whom carried guns, attempted to enter the floor of the legislative chamber and were detained by a line of state police and Capitol staff, according to video footage published by local journalists.

A lawmaker in the Democratic State released a photograph of men with guns standing in a gallery yelling at lawmakers below. “Some of my colleagues who have bulletproof vests wear them,” said Democrat State Senator Dayna Polehanki, wrote on Twitter.

A spokesperson for the Michigan Senate minority leader who said at least one legislator was wearing a body armor.

Images of the demonstration sparked strong reactions from many Americans. A Black Lives Matter organizer commented on the striking difference between the reaction of unarmed black Americans protesting against police violence and armed white Americans protesting public health measures.
