The Pentagon plans to buy more bags and will initially draw them from a stock of 50,000 that it maintains, according to two people familiar with the request.

The move is a grim counterpoint to the much-loved Pentagon deployment of two hospital ships in New York and Los Angeles to help ease the pressure on regional hospitals overburdened by the pandemic.

The Troop Support Unit of the Defense Logistics Agency manages the Pentagon’s green nylon bags, 94 inches by 38 inches, which are generally distributed in war zones. The unit has been in contact with the current contractor to assess its manufacturing capabilities but has yet to place a formal order, one of the people said.
