Coronavirus Live in the UK: Yorkshire Nightingale Hospital Opens and 778 Additional Deaths


The new Nightingale Hospital in North Yorkshire has been virtually opened by NHS fund captain Tom Moore.

The 99-year-old veteran was invited to do the honors for the Harrogate website via video link alongside Health Secretary Matt Hancock, following his remarkable £ 27m fundraising effort during the coronavirus pandemic.

Over 500 additional beds for Covid-19 patients have been installed at the Harrogate Convention Center. Click here for photos.

This additional capacity is in addition to the opening of other Nightingale hospitals in London, Birmingham and Manchester.

This is because the number of people who died after a positive coronavirus test in England increased by 778.

The NHS England has announced that the number of confirmed deaths in hospitals in England now stands at 15,607.

Health officials in Wales have also confirmed that the death toll in Wales has risen to 609 after the death of 25 other people from the virus. The death toll in Scotland rose to 985, up 70 from 915 on Monday.

This brings the death toll in the UK to 17,408, as figures for Northern Ireland have yet to be released.

Four other people died of Covid-19 in East Yorkshire with all deaths coming Monday.
