Coronavirus: Florida cases exceed 8,000, death toll continues to rise

TAMPA, Florida (WFLA) – UPDATE APRIL 2 AT 11:15 a.m..: While the number of cases in the United States exceeds 216,000, Florida reported another 1,000 cases of coronavirus on Thursday, bringing the total number of cases to more than 8,000.

At the end of Thursday morning, 8,010 people in Florida tested positive for the virus, including 7,717 residents. More than 1,000 people have been hospitalized.

The death toll is now 128, an increase of 27 since the release of the morning figures.

Some of the new deaths announced include six in the Tampa Bay area:

  • 2 new deaths in Hillsborough County: A 68 year old woman and an 86 year old woman. They are the fourth and fifth residents to die in COVID-19 County.
  • 1 new death in Pinellas County
  • 2 new deaths in Sarasota County
  • 1 new death in Polk County

In addition, Hardee County, which was the only local county without cases, has now reported its first patient, COVID-19. The resident is a 73-year-old woman. She is currently in hospital.

The United States now has 216,768 cases of coronavirus, more than China, where the outbreak began. More than 5,000 people died. There are 962,977 cases of coronavirus worldwide. The world death toll stands at 49,180.
