He is the 79-year-old infectious disease expert and became a calm and comforting presence for Americans during the coronavirus crisis.

Appearances by Dr. Anthony Fauci alongside Donald Trump during press calls to the White House have reassured many in the room about the Covid-19 epidemic.

Now it seems that while he is trying to save lives, his has been threatened.

The doctor is said to have received security briefings after receiving a number of threatening messages from right-wing extremists, apparently frustrated with his habit of publicly correcting the president.

Dr. Fauci himself declined to comment on the increase in protection when asked about it, referring the questions to the Inspector General of the Health Department instead.

But President Trump intervened by telling reporters that Dr. Fauci – director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases – did not need security because “everyone loves him”.

He added: “Besides that, they would be in big trouble if they attacked him one day … He was a great basketball player, did anyone know? He was a little short for the NBA but he was talented. “

Tesia Williams, spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, confirmed that the agents provided protection for several health officials, but would not specifically comment on the allegations – originally reported by The Hill website – if this included Dr. Fauci.

The immunologist has acquired a reputation for revealing the truth in the fight against coronaviruses, known for his frank but somewhat reassuring manner in the face of often bellicose or simply inaccurate rhetoric from the administration.

When Trump called the State Department the “deep State Department” at a press conference – a nod to far-right conspiracy theories – you could see Dr. Fauci putting his head between his hands.

But he has also become a public target for conservative experts and bloggers who claim he is undermining the administration. An article in the right-wing American Thinker called him “a puppet loving Hillary Clinton in the depths of the state.”
