JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jaguars made Florida cornerback CJ Henderson their ninth overall draft pick in the opening round Thursday night. The sports staff of News4Jax offers their analysis on the selection, the first of their two selections Thursday evening.

I laughed at Derrick Brown in Jacksonville, but I said if he was gone, Henderson would be the choice. Brown went to the Panthers two choices before and the Jaguars got Henderson. High school badly needed a playmaker after knocking out talented players on the right and left. AJ Bouye. Faded away. Jalen Ramsey. Faded away. No disrespect, but would you feel comfortable for the season with Tre Herndon and Rashaan Melvin as the guy there?

Jacksonville needed a bad corner and got the second best corner in the draft. Is it a home run selection that will inspire the fan base like a flashy receiver or a quarterback would? No.

Henderson would not have been there in 20th place and I like the choice better than a guy like defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw and any offensive lineman. Corner is so much more important and they got a good one.

The top eight picks went as expected, leaving the Jaguars to take on a player who was not one of the elite players in the draft. But Henderson meets a need and he should start right away. I wish the Jaguars had taken a big man – an attacking tackle or a defensive line – and they can still do it with the 20th choice.

But the question is, can they find someone who can make a big difference? I expect Henderson to be a good player, but I don’t think he will play at the level of Jalen Ramsey. That being said, if he is a non-dramatic player, Doug Marrone will be a happy man.

CJ Henderson meets a need around the corner. Jawaan Taylor said he wanted Henderson to join him here in Jacksonville and he fulfilled his wish. The Jaguars knew they needed cornerback help. After Henderson, there was a huge drop in talent. Henderson will be a starter on day 1.

With Henderson, Tre Herndon, Rashaan Melvin and DJ Hayden around the corner, the Jaguars’ high school has a bit of talent to work with. Of all accounts, Henderson’s personality is the complete opposite of Jalen Ramsey. If his game can reach close to Ramsey’s level, Henderson will be the perfect player to fill the defense gap.
