Chael Sonnen: Jon Jones Should Look At Bad Name, “Just Be A Scumbag”

Chael Sonnen knows all about using a “bad guy” character to sell fights and thinks it’s time for Jon Jones to follow suit.

Responding to Jones’ most recent arrest – one of many law clashes Jones has had over the years – Sonnen thinks there is no reason for the light heavyweight champion l ‘UFC tries to serve as a model. In fact, he thinks “Bones” should go the other way and fully embrace the role of a villain, at least when it comes to marketing to the public.

“I think Jon Jones since his last arrest, the mask is removed,” said Sonnen on Submission radio (transcription via Denis Shkuratov). “The world has known he’s been a fool for a while, but now that he’s finally in touch with what a dirty guy he is and now that he’s interviewing, he’s headed for it. Look, in terms of habitability and civility, okay, go ahead and question the character of Jon Jones. I’m talking from a marketing and promotional point of view, it does everything well.

“The concert is over, everyone knows it. You were handcuffed on TMZ and cried: “I want to go home and be with my children”. Man, it’s two in the morning, you shoot with guns while shooting and running donuts in a drunk tequila parking lot. Your time to be with your – Are your children still standing, you buttocks? The fact that he’s at this level of a scumbag, go ahead, just be a scumbag. “

Sonnen also commented on Jones’ growing rivalry with UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, which has mostly taken place on social media, although the two have made overtures to a potential super-fight at the to come up. Given the heat level so far, Sonnen has agreed that it could be compared to his own successful rivalry with Anderson Silva.

However, as much as Sonnen thinks Jones should embrace his dark side, Sonnen doesn’t think Jones is equipped to face Adesanya in a war of words.

“I have to tell you, with all due respect, that you are the first guy to say that Jon has always been good at the microphone,” said Sonnen when asked to compare trash’s conversational skills. ‘Adesanya and Jones. “Jon doesn’t even know what day it is most of the time, Jon is really only looking for the next party.” So, you are literally the first person to say that you thought Jon was speaking well. But I’ll tell you, Adesanya brings a fire. I mean, there is a venom. He practices, he repeats.

“Jon Jones is not ready for press conferences. And a lot of guys see a dishonor in this, that you should just go freestyle and answer the questions you get asked. Dude, this is no different than any other job interview or any test I have ever had in my life. If I know it’s test day, I will study for the test. Adesanya is studying for the test. He doesn’t answer the question he is asked, he waits for your mouth to finish moving, then he says whatever he wants. Jon Jones answered questions. Vouchers don’t answer questions, they process questions. ”

Sonnen has experience with Jones inside and outside the cage. The two were opposing coaches in season 17 of The ultimate fighter then faced off at UFC 159, where Jones retained his TKO title in the first round despite a horrible toe injury.

Although gab’s Sonnen’s gift and willingness to fight down a hat helped him win this unlikely light heavyweight title shot, it’s not sure if Adesanya will be able to pioneering a fight with Jones due to the fact that Jones is not a reliable box office draw in Sonnen’s eyes.

“I think this fight is more advanced than it once was,” said Sonnen. “Remember what has happened in the past 60 days, largely because of Dominick Reyes, but no one has been able to sell an arena against Jon Jones. Jon Jones was the organization’s worst drawing champion. It wasn’t Jon’s fault, Jon did everything right. It got a bit of the Roy Jones effect, where it was so good and everyone knew how this movie was going to end, so nobody wanted to buy a ticket to watch it. The reality is that now, because of the competitiveness that Reyes has shown with him, many people think that Reyes has won, including me, that all of a sudden it has become a little more interesting.

“Now Jon tries to stay away from Reyes and goes to Blachowicz to show it. I mean, these things work, these are the rules of the playing field, but the rules of the playing field do not disappear among the pros. And the point I’m trying to make is that Jon had nothing to do. He was talking about going up to the heavyweight just to be able to ask someone to watch him, he was talking about trying to get Adesanya to the lightweight just to have someone watch him. Suddenly, the world is different for Jon Jones. Jon now has two big fights between Jan Blachowicz and Dominick Reyes. Who will he fight next? I don’t know, but I can tell you with confidence, he will fight both. ”

Should the day come when Adesanya and Jones clash in the cage? Sonnen has it all for Adesanya.

“Oh, forget it, Adesanya will whip her ass,” said Sonnen.

“Do you think Thiago Santos is beating Adesanya? Or do you think Dominick Reyes defeats Adesanya? Sonnen continued. “I mean, these are very close games for Jon Jones. I thought he had lost them both. On the 10-9 must system, I thought he also lost to Santos. I am not optimistic about this. I’m not even optimistic about that of Reyes. These are just my opinions. I think this ship has sailed. I think Jon is tough, I don’t think he is the greatest of all time. I think it’s Georges St-Pierre. But I think Jon Jones would have an argument against the hardest of all time.

“To watch his grain, to watch Jon Jones see everything, shirk, and he finds a way to get the win anyway, he finds a way to pass, Jon gets a lot of credit with me. I just think that when you compare it to Adesanya, that of Adesanya. Jones is well placed, but still number two. “
