The Dallas Cowboys focused on their most important defense needs during the second day of the NFL draft Friday night, taking Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs and defensive forward Neville Gallimore from Oklahoma .

The Cowboys wandered off defense in the first round when Gallimore’s teammate, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, was unexpectedly available with 17th overall. They turned their attention back to defense in the second and third rounds.

Buffgs catcher’s younger brother Diggs Stefon Diggs, was the 51st overall choice. Gallimore was the 82nd overall choice.

Dallas lost its best cornerback in Byron jones, which signed with Miami in free agency. Diggs had three interceptions and tied for the Alabama team with eight assists.

Young Diggs made 95 choices earlier than his brother five years ago. Stefon Diggs was drafted by Minnesota in the fifth round, but ended up being traded to the Bills for several choices, including a first round this year.

“I counted on him a lot because he went through it all,” said Trevon Diggs. “He’s my father figure, so it’s a blessing to have him, to ask him questions. I will share this moment with him. “

The Cowboys tied for last place in the NFL last year and have been among the worst in the league in this category in the past five seasons. They have young cornerbacks that they love in Chidobe Awuzie, Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis, but the post was still a need.

The 6-foot-2, 304-pound Gallimore had four bags and 7 1/2 tackled for the defeat of the Sooners, who lost to LSU in the college football playoff semifinals last season. The Cowboys now have two Canadian natives on their defensive line. Tyrone Crawford was a third round pick eight years ago.

Diggs will have a good chance at starting, most likely alongside Awuzie, a second-round pick three years ago. Brown and Lewis have shown promise, and the Cowboys have signed a four-year veteran Maurice Canady in free agency. Among these players, Brown is the oldest at 26 years old.

The Cowboys also hope to spur a pass rush led by ByMarcus Lawrence with reintegration of suspended defensive ends Aldon smith and Randy Gregory. The two are sidelined by violations of the NFL’s drug policy.

Smith, who has not played since 2015, signed a one-year contract. Gregory was a second-round pick in 2015 and has been suspended four times, the most recent forcing him to miss all of last season.

The Cowboys have taken on an attacking spirit in Mike McCarthy to replace Jason Garrett, whose contract has not been renewed after a season of high expectations ending in an 8-8 record and no playoff trips.

Then Dallas gave McCarthy, who won a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers and developed several star receivers at Green Bay, another weapon in Lamb. Threat of breakout joins Pro Bowl quarterback Dak Prescott, double ground race champion Ezekiel Elliott and receiver Amari cooper, which signed a $ 100 million contract last month.

Cowboys also have two perennial Pro Bowlers in the tackle line Tyron Smith and keep right Zack Martin, the question now is whether a reorganized defense can complement what promises to be a high-powered attack.
