Businesses Can Start Applying For Emergency COVID-19 Wage Subsidy Program Monday – National


Some important developments are happening this week in the country’s relentless fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

They start Monday with companies authorized to apply for the federal government’s $ 73 billion wage subsidy program.

Eligible businesses will receive a grant equivalent to 75% of each employee’s salary, up to $ 847 per week, retroactive from March 15 to June 6. And for organizations that can, the government is asking employers to fill in the remaining quarter.

The first payments are expected to arrive by the end of next week.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will talk about it, as well as other upcoming initiatives, today during his daily briefing on coronaviruses.

Later this week, Quebec and Ontario, which account for the vast majority of COVID-19 cases in Canada, are expected to unveil frameworks for the reopening of their frozen economies.

Saskatchewan, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick have already announced tentative deadlines for returning to a semblance of normalcy.

Despite evidence of the flattening of the COVID-19 curves, politicians and public health officials stress the need for a cautious and slow approach to guard against a wave of second wave infections.

Trudeau also said that none of the recovery plans depended on people’s immunity to capture COVID-19 twice.

Yesterday, the country reported more than 1,200 new cases of COVID-19 and at least 95 more deaths.

The national record to date amounts to 46,895 confirmed cases, including 2,560 deaths and 17,334 resolved cases.
