BREAKING | Tony Ferguson vs. Justin Gaethje official for UFC 249

Tony Ferguson will officially face Justin Gaethje at the main event of UFC 249 on April 18. The two fighters signed their contracts for the fight. The pair will collide for the interim lightweight title in the main map event.

UFC President Dana White announced the news on Twitter Monday.

Ferguson was originally scheduled to face UFC light champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at the main event for UFC 249. Unfortunately travel restrictions linked to the coronavirus pandemic have forced Nurmagomedov to go into hiding in his native Russia. This development marked the fifth time a shortage of reservations between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson.

That said, the UFC successfully completed its mission to keep Ferguson on the map, having convinced Gaethje – who shares management with Nurmagomedov – to intervene with less than two weeks’ notice.

We still don’t know where this fight between Ferguson and Gaethje will take place. UFC 249 was originally scheduled to descend to Brooklyn, New York. This became an impossibility weeks ago, however, when the state shut down to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

Although the location of the card is still a mystery, a recent ESPN report suggests that it is likely to descend somewhere on the west coast, potentially on tribal land, outside the jurisdiction of the sports commissions. State. Either way, this Gaethje vs. Ferguson fight will no doubt take place in an empty, fanless place.

Ferguson will begin this fight on an absurd winning streak of 12 fights. Gaethje, meanwhile, has won his last three games, all by knockout.
