CNN’s Fareed Zakaria asked Gates, “How would you respond to the accusation that the Chinese covered this up, they basically cheated the rest of the world, and therefore they should be held accountable in a way or of another? “
“Well, I don’t think it’s a timely thing, because it doesn’t affect how we act today,” said Gates. “China has done a lot of things from the start. Like any country where a virus first appears, they can look back and see where they missed things. “
China has falsely claimed that the coronavirus originated from the United States military; tried to cover it up by silencing the doctors and journalists who were trying to warn the world; told the world that there was no evidence that the coronavirus could be transmitted from person to person when he knew full well that he could; intentionally lied to the severity of the epidemic and attempted to cover up the deaths; and would continue to hide critical information about the epidemic.
China’s dishonesty has been so brazen that its own allies have called the Communist nation.
“Some countries reacted very quickly and set up their tests and they avoided the incredible economic pain, and it is sad that even the United States, which you expected to do well, did it particularly badly Said Gates.
China’s economy has been devastated by the epidemic, as have many of the world’s major economies.
“It’s a distraction,” said Gates of the criticism of China.
Bill Gates says that criticism of how China lied and concealed the coronavirus is a “distraction”: “China has done a lot from the start … it has avoided the incredible economic pain … I think it there are many incorrect and unjust things said “

Gates’s remarks were immediately picked up and promoted by Chinese state propagandists.

China has also admitted to having falsely released figures on pandemics that have started in their country, such as the 2002-2003 SARS epidemic.
The Atlantic reported:
Evidence of China’s deliberate concealment of the Wuhan coronavirus epidemic is in the public domain. By suppressing information about the virus, doing little to contain it, and allowing it to spread uncontrollably during the crucial first days and weeks, the regime has endangered not only its own country and its own citizens, but also the more than 100 nations facing their own potentially devastating outbreaks. More perniciously, the Chinese government censored and detained these brave doctors and whistleblowers who tried to sound the alarm and warn their fellow citizens when they understood the gravity of what was to come.
Some American Democratic commentators and politicians are dismayed by Donald Trump and the Republicans for calling the pandemic “Wuhan virus” and repeatedly saying that China was the source of the pandemic. In naming the disease COVID-19, the World Health Organization specifically avoided mentioning Wuhan. However, by failing to point out where the epidemic began (which China has vigorously demanded), we run the risk of obscuring Beijing’s role in spreading the disease beyond its borders.
China has a history of managing epidemics, including SARS in 2002 and 2003. But the neglect of Chinese leaders in December and January – for more than a month after the first epidemic in Wuhan – far exceeds these failed responses. The end of last year was the time for authorities to act and, like Nicholas D. Kristof of The New York Times noted that “they acted decisively, not against the virus, but against the whistleblowers who were trying to draw attention to the public health threat.”
Studies have shown that if China had taken action sooner, the epidemic could have been reduced by 95% and could have been contained at the regional level.
Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) said on Sunday that he believed China allowed international flights to continue outside of China during the epidemic because the Chinese government knew it would devastate their economy, and they did not want to not the rest of the world, particularly the United States, crossing them when they suffered serious economic damage.
