Bafta Games Awards 2020: Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium dominate | Games

Indie video games were the big winners at this year’s Bafta Games Awards, which took place live Thursday night after the cancellation of the ceremony due to Covid-19.

The sci-fi action puzzle Outer Wilds won the award for best game, along with the original game design and ownership. Disco Elysium’s quirky detective adventure also won three categories: first game, narration and music.

Other winners included the space station thriller Observation for the British game, Apex Legends for multiplayer and Untitled Goose Game in the family category.

Metal Gear Solid game designer Hideo Kojima received the Bafta scholarship, with his latest title, Death Stranding, also winning the technical achievement award. The games beyond entertainment category was won by Kind Words, a game in which players send anonymous letters to other members of the community, seeking help, advice and comfort.

Bafta has broadcast the awards on Twitter, Twitch and YouTube; the winning developers delivered their acceptance speech via video calls. The presentation was moderated by the usual host Dara Ó Briain, who joked: “Usually these prices come from a lavish conference room in London – tonight they will take place entirely in my house from the hall with the large television where I play video games. We live in strange times. “

“Just two months ago we were laughing at the idea of a video game that emphasized the importance of delivery people in a post-apocalyptic landscape,” he said, referring to Death Stranding. “You win this one, Hideo Kojima. “
