A resident of the Avera Prince of Peace retirement community in Sioux Falls, who tested positive for coronavirus earlier this week, died on Friday, bringing the death toll from the pandemic to three.
According to Avera, the person was one of three people tested positive for COVID-19 at the facility.
Two positive tests on Tuesday and another on Wednesday, confirmed the retirement center on Friday afternoon.
“The health and safety of our patients is our top priority, and we are deeply saddened by this loss,” said Justin Hinker, administrator of Avera Prince of Peace. “We will take all possible precautions to stop the spread of this virus on our premises. “
The retirement community is setting up a separate unit from the other units where all positive COVID-19 residents will stay. Avera officials say this is in line with CDC best practice and will minimize infection among other residents.
“Avera is in close communication with the State Department of Health and the Avera Infectious Disease Specialist to ensure that we are taking all appropriate steps at this stage,” Avera said in a statement.
The State Department of Health is likely to report the death of a Minnehaha County resident on its website at noon on Saturday. State daily reports were closed on Friday.
