49ers debated pursuit of Tom Brady in free agency

As the world debated this winter whether Tom Brady would leave the Patriots in free will, the 49ers briefly considered whether they should try to woo the veteran quarterback.

John Lynch, general manager of the 49ers, appeared on The Rich Eisen Show Tuesday and discussed previous rumors that the team could replace starter Jimmy Garoppolo with Brady.

“When you talk about one of the greatest quarters of all time with Tom Brady, of course, you’re going to have an internal discussion,” said Lynch. “And then you hear rumors that he would like to go home, that sort of thing.

“So of course [coach] Kyle [Shanahan] and I’m having discussions. We always want to improve, so you always look at everything, especially a situation like this. But in a day or two, Kyle and I looked at each other and said, “You know what, we really like what we have at Jimmy. We love everything it brings and we really think it’s a long-term answer. I would say that we are more than ever convinced of the identity of our quarterback to Jimmy Garoppolo. ”

Lynch added that he and Shanahan stayed in touch with Garoppolo while discussing Brady’s potential plans. Before Brady has signed a two-year deal with the Buccaneers, many have speculated that he would like to return to his native California to end his NFL career.
