A further 56 cases of coronavirus were confirmed statewide on Friday, bringing the total number of COVID-19 patients in Maine to 432.
Cases are currently being reported in 15 of 16 Maine counties, according to the latest information provided by the director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Nirav Shah. Seventy-five patients were hospitalized at some point during their illness, while 113 patients recovered from the virus, said Shah.

The 56 new cases, the largest increase to date, are “cause for concern,” said Shah.
The Maine CDC also reported two new deaths on Friday, bringing the state total to nine. The two individuals were from Cumberland County. Shah would not confirm for reasons of confidentiality whether the new deaths included a Maine veteran who died Thursday of COVID-19 complications at the Togas VA Medical Center in Augusta.
The first cases of COVID-19 were reported on Friday in Aroostook and Washington counties. Aroostook’s patient was treated at Houlton Regional Hospital, according to hospital preventionist Ellen Bartlett.
