The Panthers have many needs to face this offseason. Depending on how free will works, most of them are likely to be on defense. If the team decides to keep Cam Newton and they are confident that the offensive line (in particular Matt Paradis and Greg Little) will rebound under the new coach Pat Meyer, then there are arguments to be made for them to opt for defense with their draft picks this year.

Our latest 2020 seven-lap model is an attempt at what it might look like.

Isaiah Simmons

Rebuilding Carolina's defense without Luke Kuechly in the middle will be Marty Hurney's biggest challenge this year. Adding a piece like Simmons (6 feet 4 inches, 230 pounds) that can wear as many hats could make a huge difference. In college, Simmons queued everywhere. According to Pro Football Focus, he made more than 100 snaps in five different places: linebacker, linebacker, split wedge, reinforced safety and free safety. Auburn iDL Derrick Brown is a strong prospect to consider at No. 7, but no other defender in this class can match the value and versatility of Simmons.
